Coffee. Is there anything it can’t do? Ok, I admit that I love coffee and I’m borrowing that line from the iconic Homer Simpson and switching out donuts for coffee. Even if you’re not a regular coffee drinker or hate the idea of drinking it, you have to admit that coffee has come a long way. Did you know that coffee is second to oil in dollar volume as a world commodity?
Long gone are the days of drinking plain coffee. Anyone can now whip up a gourmet hot beverage with the push of a button for guest, family, or just for yourself. What if you’re looking for a little more from your coffee than just a momentary buzz or a five dollar price tag?
I asked myself the same question. I saw Bulletproof coffee on any number of websites advertising the coffee and read some of the blog on the Upgraded Self website (where you can purchase Bulletproof coffee and other supplements). The story is that the founder of Bulletproof Executive, David Asprey, was in Tibet when he was introduced to a drink the sherpas drank for health and vitality (or something). The drink was tea mixed with yak butter. David swore by the nutritional and curative affects of the special concoction and spent his time and money to develop his own unique beverage for the masses.
It’s all because there is a big craze over coffee these days. People practically worship the coffee bean now. Face it, many of us get a thrill out of ordering and buying special coffees from specialty stores. We like grinding our own beans and some of us even reach the holy grail of bringing back our own special blended beans from Costa Rica or Hawaii.
I decided that butter in my coffee was something new to try, after all, it is the drink du jour for the silicon valley elite. So I reached out to Bulletproof and inquired about getting samples of what I would need to make the proper cup of Bulletproof coffee. I was pleasantly surprised when they came through. When the box arrived it contained a 3oz pouch of ground Bulletproof Upgraded coffee, a 3oz bottle of Brain Octane (triglycerides derived from coconut or palm kernel oils), and one bonus ampule of Unfair Advantage (listed as a dietary supplement). The ampule isn’t needed to make the proper cup of Bulletproof coffee. They also included a card with instructions for brewing the perfect cup of Bulletproof coffee and a coupon code to be used on my “next”order.
They also included directions for how to make a cup of frothy goodness (spoiler alert). I was missing a key ingredient-butter from grass-fed cows. I picked up a block of Kerrygold Irish butter. I wanted to follow as many of the instructions as closely as I could. They recommend brewing their coffee in a french press. I don’t own one even though real coffee connoisseurs swear by them. I even attempted to buy a reusable filter for my machine but purchased a circular filter and discovered my machine needs a cone shaped filter instead.
A word of caution, if you’re planning on going Bulletproof, the diet requires drinking two cups of the buttery coffee in the morning as a meal replacement. Also, leave yourself extra time. Not only are you brewing the coffee but you have extra added steps that I’ll get to in a minute.
I started by following the brewing directions on the package of coffee adding 2 1/2 tablespoons of the ground coffee for every 8oz of water-which is all I used to make one serving. While the coffee was brewing, I added 1 tsp of Brain Octane oil and 1 tbsp of Kerrygold butter to a blender.
Once the coffee was done brewing, I poured it over the butter and oil in the blender. I blended it for 30 seconds. I chose the ‘blend’ setting on low for my blender and that was enough to whip the ingredients into a frothy drink.
The first sip was a surprise. I was expecting to get a mouthful of butter taste. I was ready for the spit-take. Yet, in my opinion, the coffee didn’t taste like butter at all. Instead, it had a nice rich, full flavor. Not exactly coffee as I’m used to it though. I drink a lot of espresso drinks. I like all kinds of coffee but have found that my tastebuds gravitate toward the stronger, more bitter flavor one gets from drinking espresso drinks.
While this Bulletproof potion did not remind me of my favorite Starbucks drink, nor should it, it was a unique new coffee drink to become addicted to. It did remind me of drinking a good, full bodied coffee with cream at your favorite diner. Not the most exquisite cup of joe you’ll indulge in, but still very delicious. A cup you’ll want to keep going back for.
Here’s the kicker for me. While I wasn’t fully aware of all of the purported benefits of replacing breakfast with two cups of Bulletproof coffee, and the Bulletproof diet in general, I did find a surprisingly interesting benefit. I’ve been drinking coffee for a long time. I’ve drank all kinds of coffee and I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy many cups of espresso throughout different parts of Italy and sip Kona coffee while in Hawaii. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a cup of coffee that gave me the initial buzz and clarity I felt when I first started drinking coffee. And there it is.
About thirty minutes after drinking the cup of Bulletproof coffee (I only had one cup) I felt more alert and awake. Not jittery due to too much caffeine. Just alert and…fully functioning. I was surprised because I was not expecting to notice this benefit. I was more intrigued by the idea of butter in coffee and what it might taste like. So I rule this out as some placebo affect. I drank the cup and forgot about it beyond novelty and flavor. 30 minutes later-BAM!
I’ve had about 5-6 cups of coffee this way. I even tried it with my own pick of ground coffee. Same results. Approximately 30 minutes later I’m very alert and focused. I imagine it is comparable to taking Ritalin.
In my opinion, I would, and have been, drinking cups of the Bulletproof coffee even though I’m not doing the whole Bulletproof diet. I can enjoy the delicious, full bodied drink and the added benefit of an alert state without drinking two cups as a breakfast replacement. I’m not drinking the Bulletproof cup everyday because, as I said, I’m not following the full Bulletproof diet and unless you plan on following the diet, I wouldn’t recommend adding two cups of buttered coffee to your diet everyday.
That being said, I would like to check out the diet. I believe, whether or not I stick with a Bulletproof diet, I will continue to enjoy a cup of frothy, buttered, brain sharpening Bulletproof coffee.
